Q4 Starts Whether You're Ready or Not

September is almost gone and Q4 starts Thursday whether your books are clean or not, whether your pricing holds or not, whether you know your numbers or not.

Here is what I am watching right now across the businesses I work with. The owners who are most exhausted heading into October are not the ones who had the hardest year. They are the ones who have been making decisions all year without solid data underneath them. Every call becomes a judgment call. Every month is a surprise. By the time September ends, that wears on you.

Q4 does not have to work that way.

There are three things that separate the business owners who finish the year strong from the ones who just finish the year. First, they know their current margin, not last quarter's margin, not an estimate. Second, they know exactly where their cash will be in 90 days based on what is already contracted or recurring. Third, they have a number for what Q4 needs to produce to make the full year meaningful.

That is it. Not a complicated plan. Three numbers, clearly understood.

If you do not have those three numbers today, the next two weeks are your window. October is when Q4 decisions have to be made, and December is too late to course correct. The work happens now.

Pull your P&L. Find your margin. Look at your pipeline and your recurring revenue. Project your next 90 days. If that exercise takes longer than an hour, the books need attention before anything else.

Clean books make Q4 a strategy conversation. Everything else makes it a survival conversation.
